Premature Congratulations
Well, things haven't quite been finalized yet, but based on the way things are going, I think I can fairly safely predict that the winner of the contest is ME!!! I don't want to say that I am some sort of political genius soothsayer, so I won't say it. Oh wait, I guess I just said it. Oh well, it's out there now and it's on the internet so it must be true. I won't focus on the losers, I'll leave that to others, but I think it's clear that, as the Japanese say, the nails that stuck out got pounded back down in this contest.

Emil's Prediction - Upset Alert
Emil had problems uploading his map so I've taken his map and explanations and posted below.

David's Pick
This is how GOP control of the Presidency ends, this is how GOP control of the Presidency ends, this is how GOP control of the Presidency ends, not with a bang but with the inexorable march of the Obama behemoth reaching the goal that has become more and more realistic each passing month, a landslide victory.
I actually think this prediction is a little conservative. The only state I'm predicting to go for Obama that would be any kind of surprise is Indiana, based on the fact that Obama will dominate McCain in turnout. I think that Obama is going to outperform his polls in the South and win Virginia easily and NC narrowly. I don't think it's going to be a late night before we find out that Obama's the next President.

Jeff'y's Picks
Try as I might, I couldn't come up with a plausible scenario in which Obama captures 334 electoral votes. Oh well.
Covincing, though not quite a landslide
I got to a reasonable 270 for Obama without any true swing states. That makes me feel better.
Prediction Will Come Monday
I am happily registered as a "follower". To quote the movementarians, the leader is great the leader is good...
This blog was a great idea, looking forward to increased friendly banter and thought provoking discussions. I apologize in advance for any miss spelled words or poor syntax.

So let me ask this
I'm going to participate, as ever. I'll post my map tomorrow.
But I'm just curious how this is going to be any different from Fantasy Baseball. We'll all make selections and the Goldmans will just follow Nate Silver's advice and win.

Stakes and Formula
So, in a completely in character suggestion, Richard said we should make it interesting by having the loser have to face some tangible consequences (his suggestion being to eat a burger with buns of butter. personally, that sound delicious to me so I don't think that works, but whatever). Anyway, I'll have to give some thought to that and also to how to determine who wins and loses. Seems to me that just choosing whoever comes closest to the electoral college outcome isn't good because you could be way off on the states you pick and still luck into getting close to the right total number of electoral votes. Maybe the best way is to have it be a question of who picks the most states correctly, with electoral college vote predictions being the tiebreaker. Something else to think about. Thoughts on these things anyone?
An example Map
While this is the way the electoral map SHOULD look, this isn't my official prediction, I just wanted to put an example up there of what the map will look like if you correctly embed it.
How to do this
I found a good way for us to all share our predictions. Go to this link:
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/2008/pick-your-president/
It's a contest a the Washington Post's website to pick the electoral outcome. Basically, to get your predictions here, you just go there, make your picks and then click "Enter." On the screen that comes up, there's a box that says "Embed Your Map." You copy the entirety of what's in that box, come here, make a new post and then paste the embed data into your post and publish the post. That's all it should take. Make sure to have the title of your post be "[Insert your name]'s Prediction" or something like that so we can keep track. Remember, your honor is on the line here so choose carefully. Bad picks will be mercilessly mocked for at least the next 4 years. No pressure.
